Standing in the trash dump near Korah last March, I never could have foreseen the amazing plan that God had in store. What has transpired in the past year and a half is nothing short of a miracle.
A few weeks ago 280 kids (ranging from age 10-20), who depended on the trash dump for survival, left for boarding school. 220 of those kids went to Shashemene, a welcome contrast from the dump:

Most of the kids returned for their 2nd year and could not wait to go back. Some of the kids arrived at school for the first time, looking forward to regular healthy meals and a warm bed to sleep in each night. Thanks to our Project 61 intern, Michael, for capturing the excitement of that day!
This year, in addition to the boarding school in Shashemene, we have about 60 students at another boarding school, called Akaki. This school is much closer to Korah (about 45 minutes away), which is a better fit for some of the students. Most of the first-year students are attending Akaki because they had more room. Take a look at the grounds, here. It’s gorgeous!
As the kids left for school, 10 of them still needed a sponsor. They were sent to school in faith, believing that God would provide for them. And He DID! All 10 are now sponsored! They have someone to not only support them financially this year at school, but someone who will pray for them and encourage them through this journey.
In addition to the 280 kids at boarding school, over 70 kids are part of our new local school program, called Bright Hope. Through sponsorship, these kids attend school close to home, receive after-school tutoring, and a daily hot meal. These kids have really enjoyed learning the names of their new sponsors and have that twinkle in their eye when they talk about them! We will soon be adding about 25 new students to this program. If you are interested in sponsoring a Bright Hope child for $32/month, please email me at Erin@p61.org.
In church this past Sunday, our pastor spoke about miracles and how we must ask expectantly. Thanks to each of our sponsors for allowing God to work in your hearts and for praying expectantly. We have witnessed a modern day miracle in Korah, Ethiopia. And we give Him all the glory!
“He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the Lord’s, and he has set the world in order.” 1 Samuel 2:8

Great post, Erin! That 1 Samuel verse gives me chills every time I read it! Thanks for being an obedient servant of our Most High God by daily taking care of the countless details of sponsorship.
